Common Factors That Can Trigger Epileptic Seizures (Must Be Avoided)
It’s normal for us to worry when we have loved ones living alone, especially our family members with epilepsy. But living alone also brings our loved ones the joy of independence and freedom. What we can do, instead, is to make sure that their home is safe, easily accessible, and trigger-free. Moreover, they should also have easy access to help in case of accidents and other emergencies.
With that, here are some common factors that trigger seizures that will help create a safe and happy home environment that encourages epileptic seizure prevention.
Lights that flash/flicker
Some epileptic individuals are photosensitive and get triggered by lights that flash and flicker. The same goes for televisions which provide our loved ones entertainment, but can also show flashy displays. So, to ensure a safe home environment, ensure you or your loved ones remember the following measures when faced with flashing or flickering lights:
Cover one eye using one hand
Turn away from the source of light
Turn off the device
Alcohol
It’s normal for some homes to have a supply of alcohol for celebrations and small occasions. However, most doctors would recommend avoiding alcohol as an epileptic seizure prevention since alcohol can make anti-epileptic drugs less effective. Thus, it is advised to make sure of the following:
Store liquor away in hard to reach places to avoid temptations of binge drinking.
Encourage friends and guests to bring the liquor when there are occasions
Only allow the loved one with epilepsy to drink alcohol when there is someone else.
Missed Medications
One of the most common factors of a seizure. So, it is always encouraged to never miss a scheduled medication to avoid the risk of seizures. Missing even one medication can also already trigger seizures. As epileptic seizure preventions, the following are encouraged:
Ensure there is enough medication for at least a week.
If medication is almost running out, make sure to get new ones.
Store them in an easily accessible and visible place.
Regularly check expiration dates.
Practice a routine or set alarms as reminders to take them as prescribed.
Stress and Lack of Sleep
Sleeping problems are one of the biggest seizure triggers. As such, people with epilepsy are mostly advised not to work night shifts to avoid chances of getting a seizure.
Regardless of our age or ability, the bedroom is our safe space. So, it’s a place that needs to be assessed to make sure whether your loved ones are safe and comfortable in their own rooms and that they can sleep comfortably. Here are some measures to ensure that:
Replace softer, sagging mattresses with firmer ones since they provide more support and are more comfortable.
Establish a sleep routine and fixed times
Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages (which are also triggers) before bedtime.
Lessen screen time an hour before bedtime.
Dehydration and Skipping Meals
Lack of fluids and not eating properly can cause seizures. Moreover, seizures can be caused by low blood pressure due to skipping meals. So, make sure that there are reminders and routines set to ensure they receive enough water and food everyday and avoid skipping.
